Dr. Tom became a vet because he wanted to work with animals, and he still loves what he does! He was born and raised in Canada, gaining early exposure to all kinds of animals while working at a zoo in Ontario, helping to run trail rides in Calgary, and always having family pets around.
He completed his DVM at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan in 1999 and went straight to work in both large and small animal medicine. Dr. Tom started Carstairs Veterinary Clinic very early in his career and has practiced in Carstairs ever since.
Over the last number of years, Dr. Tom has focused exclusively on canine medicine, providing orthopedic surgical assessments and repairs with a focus on TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) and total hip replacement surgery. He takes a proactive approach, pursuing further education and new technologies, products, and procedures that improve surgical outcomes for his four-legged patients and make recovery easier for their owners. Dr. Tom continues to be motivated by the drastic improvements his patients experience, often becoming fully functional and very active again within months of surgery.
Outside of the operating room, Tom has a large family he raises in the country, a small herd of horses, and the family dog and cat. He enjoys downhill skiing, playing guitar, fixing things around the farm, and trying to become a better fisherman!
